Difficult Jigsaw Puzzles

Today, diabolical puzzle manufacturers are producing jigsaws that are increasing difficult to assemble. They employ cutting techniques that result free-form pieces, where virtually no two pieces are alike. Gone are the straight edges so vital to organizing the pieces and building the border. Today's puzzles feature irregular borders, unusual shapes and puzzles that require building from the inside out.

Monster Jigsaws

1000 piece jigsaw puzzles have been out-classed. In the last few years, top puzzle-makers have been regularly turning out jigsaw puzzles of 5000 pieces and up. Most notably (or notoriously), Ravensburger has produced a series puzzles with 18,000 pieces and 24,000 pieces. Designed to drive even the most hard-core puzzler mad, these puzzles require infinite patience and nearly infinite space to complete.

Wasgij Puzzles

This puzzle manufacturer has introduced an interesting twist on the traditional puzzle. The puzzle is fairly conventional, except that the image on the box is only an indication of the puzzle image. In fact, the image on the box is merely a clue as to what the puzzle image is. By putting yourself in the shoes of the observers pictured on the box you just might be able to figure out what the puzzle should be when it's assembled.

Double Trouble Puzzles

If you really like puzzles, try one of these puzzles within a puzzle.

Photo Mosaics

Each piece is a tiny, individual photo. Together they assemble into a larger photo. This twist on the traditional jigsaw provides an added challenge as you need to be able to see the forest through the trees in order to put one of these jigsaws together.

Double-Sided Mirrored Jigsaws

Double-sided jigsaws come in two flavors--the same image on both sides or two different images. Either way, they can be maddeningly complex, as once you've sorted the pieces you can't be sure they're even right side up. Not quite up to that? Try a mirrored jigsaw. The assembled puzzled forms a mirror image of the picture on the box.

Mystery Jigsaws

Another jigsaw with no picture reference, mystery jigsaws require you read a short book, assemble the jigsaw, then look for the clues to solve the mystery. These are great for the puzzler who likes a little mystery thrown into.

3D Puzzles

Globes, maps and famous works of architecture can all be made into jigsaw puzzles. These jigsaws assemble into 3D structures that range from a few inches to several feet. One of the newer 3D formats is the Ravensburger Puzzleball. Once assembled, you can display the completed puzzle on the enclosed stand. The plastic pieces fit snugly together and no special preservation is required. The Ravensburger Puzzleball also has a smaller sibling that assembles into an ornament.

100 Piece Jigsaw Puzzles

To help us stay alert and sharp, we may need to constantly challenge our minds. One of the ways we can do this is by solving puzzles and playing certain games that help stimulate our brains. Some of the more popular games we can play are the ones that simulate mental games on TV, such as Jeopardy. As for puzzles, there are different types of puzzles that we can choose from, including the very popular crossword puzzles. However, another popular kind of puzzle is the jigsaw puzzle, which not only can stimulate our minds but our other senses as well.

Types of jigsaw puzzles

The kinds of jigsaw puzzles that are available in the market range from relatively simple to some of the most complex and difficult to piece together. Given this, you should only pick the type of puzzle that you think best fits your needs. A very simple puzzle may not serve the purpose of challenging your mind. On the other hand, getting a puzzle that requires a substantial amount of time and a substantial amount of energy could potentially rob you of the energy you would need to do other tasks. In addition to this, not being able to finish a puzzle in one sitting can be very frustrating and it could keep you distracted.

However, getting a puzzle that is just right for the amount of free time that you have and is just enough to challenge your mind would be a better idea. For this purpose, it would be best to get 100-piece jigsaw puzzles. These kinds of puzzles are easier to put together compared to puzzles that have thousands of pieces, but the challenge that these puzzles provide is enough to get our minds going to help us get through a day of more intense intellectual activity.

Where to get 100-piece puzzles

Apart from the traditional places like department stores and specialty stores, there are also other sources of 100-piece jigsaw puzzles. One very practical source is the Internet, which can allow you to download and print a 100-piece jigsaw puzzle from the comfort of your home or your office.

Playing mental games and solving puzzles can help us keep our minds sharp and focused. This is because these provide us with a way to challenge our minds, which can help us to accomplish other tasks in a better way. One good example of such is the 100-piece jigsaw puzzle, which provides an 'easy' way to solve a puzzle while providing an appropriate amount of mental challenge.

Buy Jigsaw Puzzles That Are Fully Interlocking

Many jigsaw puzzles are fully interlocking which means that adjacent pieces of the puzzle are connecting in such a way as to secure the pieces in place, avoiding mishaps of pieces coming apart once they have been solved. The pieces are interlocked so they fit tightly together and can be easily moved if necessary. When you look for interlocking pieces so once you solve the pieces they stay in place.

Many of the interlocking ones have pieces that are shaped exactly the same. This makes the jigsaw puzzle more complex to solve making it even more important for the pieces solved to stay in position. When you buy jigsaw puzzles with pieces that are similar in shape they normally have rounded tabs out on opposite ends, with related blanks tabs cut into the sides. This configuration adds extra holding power to the interlocking pieces and provides an additional level of complexity to solving them.

Other interlocking ones have pieces that have tabs and blanks arranged in varying intervals on each piece, all of them with four sides so they all have two tabs and two blanks. These uniform-shaped jigsaw puzzle pieces are fully interlocking and are normally the most difficult jigsaw puzzles to solve. The difficulty stems from the fact that the shapes are all very similar and harder to distinguish one from the other. Creating A Family Tradition-Jigsaw Puzzles

Do you find it difficult to spend time together as a family?

There are so many pressures and activities that can take away from the sense of family which was more commonly experienced 50 years ago. Parents often both work, and their commute can be tiring and long. For children there is school and homework, TV, video games, and the computer to juggle with. This does not include outside the home activities such as belonging to sports teams and organizations. All of these factors mean that the family is not together so often. Many activities that occupy children nowadays are individualistic or non-social. Electronic forms of entertainment are now normal, but the disadvantage is that they are not conducive to social interaction and relationship building.

Parents increasingly have to plan to set aside time to spend as a family. During these times it is a good idea to plan activities that involve everyone. A great way of bonding is to do an activity where everyone works together to accomplish a project.

Doing a jigsaw puzzle together is a good example of this and has many benefits. Working on a jigsaw puzzle is a practical activity that all ages can participate in some way. Even younger children can be encouraged to help. They can sort the pieces into like colors, or look for particular pieces. They feel such a sense of accomplishment when they find the piece and help complete the section.

For children, a jigsaw puzzle has several learning applications. It develops spatial awareness and hand eye coordination. There are analytical, abstract, and concrete thinking skills that are needed to become adept at doing a jigsaw puzzle.

While the family is together around the puzzle, a relaxed natural environment is created for conversation and relationship building. It develops a sense of team as all participate.

Doing a jigsaw puzzle is also a great introduction to other types of hobbies and crafts that involve using hands and creating something. For the upcoming generation these types of crafts and hobbies are in danger of dying out as electronic entertainment increases in popularity and use.

I have fond memories of doing jigsaw puzzles with my family as a child. It became a family tradition especially during the winter months. Today, however, this can still be done but without the inconvenience of losing the use of the dining room table until the puzzle is completed. There are now puzzle mats and other new storage possibilities now available.

In comparison to the jigsaw puzzles that were around when I was a child, the jigsaw puzzles today are far more interesting and appealing. There are shaped puzzles, glowing, educational puzzles, and more complex puzzles for the experienced puzzler such as 3D and two sided puzzles.

Create a tradition for your family. Plan now and buy some jigsaw puzzles to bring out on a rainy or cold weekend and have a refreshing family bonding time .

I would recommend http://www.thepuzzlemania.com as a good place to order puzzles online and get prepared for family fun.

The creative juices flow freely with puzzles

Taking all of the four learning styles into one experience in putting together a puzzle of the Eiffel tower in Paris enables a child to imagine himself actually ascending the great tower and looking our throughout the surrounding scenery. As he places the piece containing the snack vendor, he can taste the local food. The piece with the shrubbery can offer a lesson in local biology and so much more.

Preserve Jigsaw Puzzles

Most jigsaw puzzle enthusiasts like to preserve jigsaws, especially if they involve 1000 pieces or more, as it is a tribute to their patience and labor. Preserving a jigsaw by mounting, laminating, and framing would enable others to appreciate one's hobby while serving as a nice decorative piece on the wall.

After patiently putting the jigsaw puzzle together, one should gingerly place a thin piece of plastic between the underside of the jigsaw puzzle and the surface that one is working on. This is to prevent the counter or table from getting residual glue, which often seeps through, on it.

One should then evenly apply glue to the upper (picture) surface of the jigsaw. One could use soft wood sticks to compress the puzzle while gluing and wait for an hour or two for it to dry. One could then apply a second coat of glue. Multiple light coats, as opposed to a thick coating, prevent pieces of the picture from bloating or swelling up. One could use a sponge for application or use the applicator provided.

Some thicker glue would do for bigger piece puzzles whereas, a more liquid glue would be better for tight fitting puzzles. A shinier finish could be used for irregular shapes that cannot be laminated or for pictures too big to be framed.

Once the jigsaw is thoroughly dried it can be turned over. It can then be glued on the back to mount on a plywood board cut to size. One could laminate if desired or spray the top surface with an acrylic spray to safeguard from dust and other contaminants. One could also mount it on to a sheet of Styrofoam with rubber cement and then fit into a wooden frame.

One's jigsaw is now ready to be displayed or to be given as a gift to a loved one.

Framing Jigsaw Puzzles

Nowadays, jigsaw puzzles can portray every imaginable scene. You can find jigsaw puzzles that depict countless images such as beach scenes, mountain scenes, portraits, famous works of art such as the paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel, cartoon characters, and everything in between. You can find a puzzle that fits the different tastes and preferences of people. As a result, jigsaw puzzles have now become a very popular gift choice. Apart from the fun that solving them offers, some of these jigsaw puzzles are very nice to look at, which has led many people to frame them and give them as gifts.

Picking a frame for a jigsaw puzzle

Preserving and giving a jigsaw puzzle as a gift can be comparable to giving a picture or a painting to someone. You need to be careful in picking a frame for the puzzle, as a frame could either enhance or diminish the value of the puzzle. In buying a frame, you could opt to buy a frame and frame the puzzle yourself. Instructions on how to do so are readily available, especially on the Internet. Another way would be to go to a professional frame maker and to get a customized frame for your puzzle. Although the second option can prove to be more expensive, the advantages that this option brings more than makes up for its price.

One of the advantages of getting a professional to do the job is that he can advise you on color schemes, the texture, the shape and the design that would best fit the jigsaw puzzle that you want to frame. Another advantage is that you would be able to select from a wider selection of frames and designs as custom frame makers are very flexible and they can accommodate any specifications you may have. More importantly, getting a professional to do the job can assure you that the framing would be done the right way, which is a good thing especially if you are giving the puzzle as a gift.

Given that jigsaw puzzles have now become a very popular gift choice, more and more people are choosing to have them framed. However, getting a professional to do the framing can be considered the better option, as compared to doing it yourself. This is because doing so allows you to benefit from the expertise of the frame maker, which can help you come up with a wonderful gift that your friends or relatives would surely appreciate.
